SilentLie – “Blood Under Snow” EP (2013)

Independent Release

Review by Tony Cannella

From Italy, the band SilentLie was formed in 2005 by vocalist Giorgia and guitarist Luigi. In 2007 they recorded the demo “Behind My Face”. In addition to that they have recorded songs for various compilations and even had a song included on the soundtrack for the movie “Blood Sisters”. Now the band returns with 5-song, 25-minute EP entitled, “Blood Under Snow”. SilentLie has an affinity for writing solid melodic songs with a hard rock/heavy metal groove and “Blood Under Snow” is a testament to this fact.

The blazing out-of-the-box track “Regret” gets us off to a running start. I really like the vocals of Giorgia. I’m not sure what it is I like about her. Technically she may not be the best vocalist but her vocals just offer the songs depth and character and you can just feel her singing her heart out with each note. The lead guitar provided by Luigi is also very good. He offers an old school metal style while infusing modern elements as well. “While I Hurt Myself” opens with a solid riff and the song is filled with so much heart, passion and emotion. Next is the title song “Blood Under Snow”. This track was ok, but maybe the weakest of the 5-songs presented here. “Cruel Look” is next and has a pretty cool stop/start rhythm to it and a killer riff. The final song, “Any Emotion In You” is a moody slice of gothic metal that brings things to a close. The bass line for this song reminded me a bit of “Heaven and Hell” by Black Sabbath.

“Blood Under Snow” is an album that grew on me with each listen. I am not sure what I was expecting but SilentLie really surprised me in a positive way. While there are some minor things that I can nit-pick at, the reality is that Silentlie have written some damn fine songs.
