The Pretty Reckless – “Going to Hell” (2014)

Label: Razor & Tie/Cooking Vinyl

Review by Tony Cannella

The Pretty Reckless is an aggressive modern metal band from New York City. The band is fronted by actress Taylor Momsen. In 2010 The Pretty Reckless released their debut album “Light Me Up”. Now the band unleashes their sophomore record, “Going to Hell”.

We begin our trip to hell with “Follow Me Down” which is a pretty cool opener. Next is the title song which is built around the hugest of guitar riffs and is easily my favorite song. “Heaven Knows” is next and it has an anthemic and infectious quality to it. “House on a Hill” allows the band to show a more sensitive side (yes, there is one) with a tender ballad. Don’t get too relaxed however as the next track “Sweet Things” comes on like a juggernaught. “Dear Sister” is a one minute song that segues into the heavy “Absolution”. Other highlights include: “Burn”, “Why’d You Bring a Shotgun to the Party” and “Fucked Up World”. Despite their ‘modern’ metal approach, TPR throw other influences in the mix like alternative and classic rock and I also think Taylor‘s vocals are great. She’s got such an expressive style. She can do aggressive, angry and sensitive equally well.

Yes, Taylor Momsen has come a long way since playing Cindy Lou Who in “How The Grinch Stole Christmas”. With “Going to Hell”, The Pretty Reckless offers up a dark, emotional and confrontational cocktail. The Pretty Reckless has all of the makings for a successful year. “Hell” never sounded so good.
