Coronatus – “Cantus Lucidus” (2014)

Label: Massacre Records

Review by Tony Cannella

The symphonic metal band Coronatus was formed in 1999 in Ludwigsburg, Germany. They released their debut album (Lux Noctis”) in 2007 and have now released album number six Cantus Lucidus” via Massacre records.

Of course one of the major selling points for Coronatus is that they continue to have two female lead vocalists. Each singer has their own distinctive style and each brings something different to the table. They also use choir-like background vocals to great effect. The opening track “Schnee & Rosen” kicks things off and showcases the bands diverse style. Coronatus is also known for alternating between singing in English and their native German. My favorite song is the second track “Deborah”. This has a nice up-tempo vibe and the contrasting vocal styles are on full display. This is the best song they’ve ever done, in my opinion. The violin intro kicks of “No Holy Wars” before the straight-forward guitar riffs join in. The lyrics may be somewhat simplistic but it delivers a timeless, topical message. “The Elvenwell (I Can Give You)” is another strong track and my 2nd favorite. Other highlights include: “Cathy’s Floor”, “Autumn Child” and the 8-minute album closer “Ihr Habt Die Schuld”.

As their albums have progressed and the band has matured, Coronatus continues to be one of the most underrated bands in the crowded symphonic metal genre. Hopefully with “Cantus Lucidus” their time has arrived.

Rating – 89/100
