Review by Tony Cannella

From Italy, the power/progressive metal band Souls of Diotima formed in 2004. They released their debut album “Maitri” in 2011 and followed that up in 2012 with “What Remains of the Day”. Now, 4 years later the band returns with their most monumentally ambitious album yet entitled, “The Sorceress Reveals – Atlantis”. This album features some massive storytelling and musicianship on a grand scale. “The Sorceress Reveals – Atlantis” is an epic concept record which tells the story of Atlantis (naturally). I can only imagine the time that went into writing and creating such a story, and that hard work absolutely pays off with the final result. The album plays like a movie. There are many interludes bridging the songs and story together and it always allows the furthering of the narrative. Also, the story is told through the songs and lyrics. The whole thing is over an 1 h-long and the songs range from the epic 8-minute“The Land of the Wind” to songs in the 4-6-minute range. Highlights include: “Stories”, “Songs and Celebrations”, “Divine Love”and “Tears of Fury”. There are a lot of odd time signatures and meticulous musicianship as you would expect with quality prog metal. In addition, the band adds plenty of bombastic elements giving it a power metal texture. The between songs interludes definitely added to the story and helped to move it right along. The word epic gets thrown around quite liberally these days, but there is no other way to describe, “The Sorceress Reveals – Atlantis”. There is certainly a lot going on here both musically and lyrically. Souls of Diotima are sure to have the metal world talking with this one.

Rating – 93/100
