A Persuasive Reason – “A Persuasive Reason” EP (2013)

Independent Release

Review by Tony Cannella

The Florida based progressive/symphonic metal band A Persuasive Reason were founded in 2011 by bassist TJ Jones. After carefully assembling the current line-up, the band began work on their self-titled debut and here it is.

Throughout the course of its 30-minute playing time, A Persuasive Reason presents us with 6-songs that are of a high caliber. The futuristic intro “Unrest” leads us into the melodic “Destination”. Lead vocalist Jessica Hicks is phenomenal. She has an operatic style, but her singing is quite diverse as well. She is backed by some outstanding musicians as well including Dana Burnell who used to play drums in the progressive metal band Crimson Glory. Continue reading »

Leah – “Of Earth & Angels” (2013)

Label : Ex Cathedra Records

Review by Tony Cannella

What do you get when you mix Celtic songstresses Enya and Loreena McKennit with heavier more bombastic artists like Nightwish and Within Temptation? Well, it’s hard to say for sure, but it would probably sound a little something like the Canadian singer Leah and her debut album “Of Earth & Angels”.

“Of Earth & Angels” is solid from the opener “Prisoner”. This is a nice up-tempo song that sets the pace perfectly. “Remember” is next and is just a beautifully haunting song that changes tempos. Leah has got a wonderfully emotional singing style and musically the songs are well paced and pretty diverse. Continue reading »

Infinitus Mortus – “The Conspiracy of Love” (2012)

Independent Release

Review by Tony Cannella

From New Jersey, the Symphonic metal band Infinitus Mortus released their debut album “2012” in 2010. At that time the band consisted of only two members: Stephen Megna played all of the instruments and he was joined by lead vocalist Tara. Now Infinitus Mortus are a trio. Stephen Megna remains (and still plays all of the instruments), but this time is joined by a new male vocalist Vincent James Meehan and his sister Caitlin Meehan on female vocals. This line-up makes its debut on the second Infinitus Mortus album, “The Conspiracy of Love”.

“The Conspiracy of Love” is a concept album dealing with the pain and heartache of love. Continue reading »

Illuminata – “A World So Cold” (2011)

Label : Twilight Zone Records

Review by Tony Cannella

My first introduction to the double female fronted Austrian band Illuminata came via their impressive EP, “A Frame of Beauty” in 2009. Now, the band has released their second full-length album “A World So Cold”. Their music is a coming together of symphonic power metal combined with movie score type music. Illuminata is a six member band featuring three males and three females – including two female lead vocalists.

The intro “Ashes of Times” is an orchestral piece that sounds like it’s ready for Hollywood. It is a cool intro that segues into the piano opening of “Cold Hands Warm Hearts”. Continue reading »

Edenbridge – “The Bonding” (2013)

Label : SPV/Steamhammer

Review by Tony Cannella

On their long awaited eighth studio album, the Austrian symphonic metal icons Edenbridge continue where they left off on their previous album “Solitaire” which was released three long years ago. Ever since their debut “Sunrise in Eden” was released in 2000, the band has faced many line-up changes, but the two constants have remained lead vocalist Sabine Edelsbacher and multi-instrumentalist Lanvall and on “The Bonding” they continue to steer this symphonic metal ship onward and upwards.

Edenbridge continues to combine epic type numbers with shorter more accessible songs. The 7-minute “Mystic River” gets us started and is a great way for the band to announce their return. Continue reading »
