Welcome to Silver Fang

Hi Stephanie, welcome to Femme Metal Webzine. How are you? And how is this period treating you?

I’m doing great! We’ve just kicked off the EP2 release cycle for Death or Devotion, so it feels like this really fun whirlwind of excitement and chaos in the best way. I can’t wait to keep sharing all the new songs we’ve been working on with you all.

The previous debut EP Labyrinth

Even though the debut Labyrinth EP was released last year in April, what can you recall about the general album production?

The whole Labyrinth EP was completely self-produced. Jesse, our guitarist, recorded, mixed, and mastered every track himself. Because we do everything in-house, the recording process is actually super relaxed and fun. There’s no pressure, no clock ticking down like when you’re paying for studio time, so we really got to take our time and enjoy creating it.

The previous debut EP Labyrinth in lo-fi format

The debut EP Labyrinth was published in a lo-fi format. Can you explain to us the differences between the normal one?

The lo-fi versions started out as a little experiment we were doing just for fun, and we ended up loving the vibe so much that we decided to do it for the whole EP and put it out there for everyone to hear. It gave the songs a completely different atmosphere, more laid-back and dreamy compared to the original versions.

Silver Fang and the collaboration with Misstiq

I know that on Labyrinth EP you have collaborated with producer Misstiq, former Earth Caller. What did you learn from this experience?

This was such a fun process! Jesse started by putting together a simple instrumental loop for me, and I basically locked myself in the studio to reimagine the melodies. Our goal was to flip the emotions of the originals, to make these songs feel like the opposite of what they were before.

Once I had the new melodies down, Jesse built out a fuller, more progressive arrangement, and then we sent it off to Misstiq. She completely elevated everything we gave her, it was pretty incredible hearing the songs come back and feeling like she absolutely nailed the brief. We were all just sitting there like, Yep, she understood the assignment!

Singing true emotions in Silver Fang music

Silver Fang is said to “deliver dark and powerful stories of trauma, devastation, and destruction”. How much do you personally relate to this experience? And how much difficult is it to being vulnerable in front of your audience when singing these songs?

It’s definitely not easy. I’ve always connected most with artists who share a piece of themselves in their music, so I try to do the same. I think it makes the performance feel more real. That said, being that vulnerable in front of a crowd can be draining, it’s an emotional experience every time.

But the cool thing is, even when I’m feeling exposed, the crowd gives so much energy back. There’s this connection that happens, and that’s what keeps me going. At the end of the day, I just want to connect with people through our music, and if being vulnerable is the price I pay, it’s worth it!

The new single of Silver Fang

Recently, Silver Fang have unveiled the new single Haunting. What can you share about it?

Haunting was what I’d call a total ‘accidental song,’ haha. I was just messing around on guitar, singing some nonsense over it, when Jesse suddenly burst into the studio like, ‘We have to record this!’ So we quickly laid down a basic guitar loop, and I freestyled some melodies over it. From there, we fleshed out the arrangement, and by the end of the night, the whole song was done. Honestly, it’s probably one of the fastest songs we’ve ever written.

Shooting the video of Haunting

The Haunting video is completely DIY without any crew and barely no setup. How challenging was it to shoot? And which is the most important lesson learned?

The hardest part was definitely being upside down for the whole clip and trying to nail the performance in one take, I could feel all the blood rushing to my head and was super lightheaded when I got up! The biggest lesson I learned was to stay flexible and willing to adapt. We originally had this whole mini storyline planned with multiple angles, but when I started editing, I ended up hating how it looked.

So I had to figure out how to make it work with what we had. Luckily, we’d filmed the performance shots as one-takes to keep things simple, and by pure chance, the upside-down version just felt so much stronger. Jesse did an amazing job moving the FX lens while filming, and once I color graded it, I fell in love with the shot more and more. Sometimes the best stuff comes from happy accidents!

Silver Fang playing at the Citadel

Some time ago, Silver Fang played a special headline show at the Citadel in Brisbane. What can you tell me about it? Also, do you have any plans for an overseas tour?

It was so good to get back up to Brisbane after playing Monolith late last year! Sharing the stage with the guys in Citadel was incredible, they put together such a killer lineup and put on an amazing show, so we were stoked to be part of it.

We even did a guest vocals swap, where I sang on one of their songs, and they jumped in on one of ours, which was such a special moment for me. They’re insanely talented and genuinely lovely people, and they absolutely deserve way more recognition. As for overseas touring, if all goes to plan, we’ll see you in the next couple of years!

Labyrinth EP is out now, and can be streamed here.
