I noticed a recent thread, the comeback of old school rock. Away from all the digital evolutions, the synth supremacy, the electro-kingdom, many bands have rediscovered their blues roots, the origins of rock, and decided to make some old time music, sume pure, powerful, blues-rock. Oh, well…great! Simply great! Especially when the results are this good, I’m always thrilled to discover new “old” bands, like Blues Pills (And I guess you could easily imagine the genre they play by their name, apart from the fact that I gave it away in the intro.)
“Devil Man” is the title of the EP, and it’s only 4-song-long, but it’s enough to get a taste of Blues Pills‘ sound. I must say the band really carefully crafted their songs, everything feels really in the right place and with the perfect sound. Elin‘s voice’s the thing which really stands out, powerful, and with a classic vibe really in place for their sound. Also, we have a great guitarist to listen: Dorian Surraux. Articles have already been written about him and his guitar skills…aren’t you curious to find out what the fuzz’s all about? I assure you it’s worth your time! Also the rhythmic section, Zack Anderson on bass and Cory Berry on drums create some really strong grooves which will make you move your feet, head and all your limbs in general.
Picking a favorite song out of the 4? It’s a really difficult choice, but I’d sincerely go with “Dig In”, the last song of the EP, for its dreamy feeling. Oh, and one last thing: Blues Pills aren’t american (even though they do sound american, at least because they appear to know a lot about blues music.), they’re based in Orebro, Sweden, even though their members are Swedish or French or American. Talk about “melting pot”. Well, talking more about this EP is useless, I think, you just have to listen to it. It’s very short, so it won’t take you long, and you won’t regret one single minute of it. Don’t say I didn’t warn you when you’ll find yourself listening to “Devil Man” again and again and again!
