MESSA – Just a monumental and natural progression

Messa is a doom metal band from Italy. The band has existed since 2014 and released its debut in 2016. With its just-released fourth album and the first via Metal Blade Records, “The Spin,” Messa aims to showcase its chops and natural progression in the realm of doom metal.

“Void Meridian” kicks off with a laid-back atmosphere and a trippy vibe before kicking into high gear. A cool guitar riff leads the way on this song. Next up is the heavy, up-tempo track “At Races”. “The Spin” is seven songs and 41 minutes of high-energy, ethereal music with a highly atmospheric vibe. The album features shorter songs in the 4-5 minute range and longer, more epic numbers.

The first of the longer songs is the bombastic beauty of “The Dress,” which clocks in at 8 minutes. Other highlights include “Reveal” and the almost 9-minute album closer “Thicker Blood. “The Spin” is a solid listen from top to bottom. For me, the direction and style that Messa delivers are exciting and ambitious.
